It’s that time of year again, when eyes sparkle and arms
embrace in celebration. It’s fall graduation at the University of San Francisco, as commencement exercises
get underway Dec. 17.
Speaking at the College of Arts and Sciences commencement
will be Sister Mary Hughes, O.P. Sr. Hughes will accept an honorary doctoral
degree on behalf of the Leadership Conference of Catholic Women Religious
(LCWR), of which she is president, for their contributions to the country and
to the Catholic Church.
“We honor Catholic Women Religious to recognize their
uncompromising commitment to serve those underrepresented and underprivileged
with love and concern,” said USF President Stephen A. Privett, S.J. “The
sisters are extraordinary persons of faith devoted to building a better world
through prayer and hard work. They offer an inspiring example of service in the
modern world for our students and graduates.”
Founded at the request of the Vatican’s Congregation for
Religious in 1956, the LCWR, comprised of thousands of Catholic sisters, work
today for justice and human rights in every corner of the globe. Their drive
and dedication in the areas of education, healthcare, and advocacy have changed
the course of the nation for the better.
Scheduled to receive an honorary doctoral degree during
commencement exercises for the School of Education and the School of Nursing is
Sister Cathryn deBack, O.P., founder of the nonprofit Christmas Store and the
Family School, and affordable housing resident manager of Rose Court.
The 152nd fall commencement will be held at St. Ignatius
Church on the USF campus:
