Message from the Founder

It’s a great honor to have the IP Institute bear my name as the "McCarthy Institute." I see the creation of the Institute as the culmination of my more than 40 years of teaching, research, and writing in the IP field.

I’ve been delighted to see the success of the programs that the Institute has sponsored in its first ten years. The Institute has hosted dozens of speakers from academia and law practice to speak to USF students on cutting edge issues, adding an important dimension to the study of IP at the USF School of Law.

McCarthy Institute Founding Director Tom McCarthy was honored for his contributions to trademark law during a reception at the INTA annual meeting.

Details and videos available here.
Read about it here

Recently, the McCarthy Institute has sponsored conferences both on and off campus aimed at practitioners and students, featuring influential speakers from government, industry, and academia. These have attracted participants and speakers from around the world. These conferences  have been both well-attended to capacity and immensely popular as a place for high-level discussion by those who are intimately involved in influencing IP problems created by the internet as well as cutting edge issues of trademark law. These activities could not have been accomplished without the participation and support of our sponsors, especially that of Microsoft Corp.

The McCarthy Institute focuses on the impact of increasing global trade, communications and how the law can shape world trade to maximize its positive benefits. Situated within sight of the Pacific Ocean, the Institute is in an ideal location to look outward toward the Asian market and the rest of the world.
