Pharos Answers

1. What is Pharos?  
Pharos is the software package implemented by USF that provides a "green", university-friendly approach to printing from any location as well as authentication, copy/print accounting, print release, printing security and scan-to-USB/SD card (at select locations). Students, faculty and staff can swipe their One Card ID or use their USF Connect credentials to gain access to the functions at any of the public Pharos Public Use Multi-functional Printer/Copier (mfp) located on campus, including most Distributed Campuses and Residence Halls.  Alumni, Guests, Affiliates/Contractors, and Library Borrowers can also utilize the copy and print services.  Visit the Public Use Multi-functional Printer/Copier main page to learn how.

2. Who can use the system?

3. What are the benefits?
Pharos Uniprint software that opens up additional features for the USF campus such as:
(i) 
Black & white + Color copying and printing on a single device;
(ii) Wireless 
printing from your computer with secure release at any of Pharos Public Use mfp/copier on campus;
(iii) Informed Print - Cost preview prior to job release at computer & device;
(iv) Increase network and system security; 
(v) Authentication using your USF One Card ID or typing your USF username & password at the device screen;
(vi) Cost management and reporting tool; and much more.

5. I am visiting USF. Can I use the MFP/copier to copy and/or print?
Yes.  Please visit the Public Use Multi-functional Printer/Copier main page to get started.  Click on the role that is most applicable to you:  Alumni, Guest, or Contractor/Affiliate.  There are step by step instructions and guides for your reference.

7. What are the device features and capabilities?
Pharos Public Use Multi-functional Printer/Copier devices are capable of copying and printing in black & white and color.  At select locations, the scan-to-USB/SD Card feature is available. Please note that a user cannot print from a USB/SD Card.

8. I am faculty, how can I print using the library copier MFPs and other public copier MFPs?
For Full-time/Part-time/Adjunct faculty members with an active Banner role and a USF ID card:  Quick Reference Sheet:  Guide for Faculty and Staff
To download the Pharos client software and additional instruction sheets, please visit the Public Use Multi-functional Printer/Copier main page to get started.  Click on the "Faculty and Staff" menu bar.  

For faculty members who do not have an active Banner role and USF ID card, however require copy/print/scan functionalities prior to Banner activation/start date, a Adjunct Copy/Print Card can be requested. To get started, the Department Budget Manager should complete an Adjunct Copy/Print Card Request Form and submit it to purchasing@usfca.edu

Note to Budget Manager: Adjunct Copy/Print Cards will be deactivated on the faculty member's start date. Please return inactive cards to Purchasing & Ancillary Services (HHLL).

9. How much does it cost to utilize the functions?
Copy/Print - Single-sided impressions for B&W is $0.06 per impression; and for Color is $0.30 per impression
Copy/Print - Double-sided impressions for B&W is $0.12; and for Color is $0.60

11. Do I need to connect to USF’s network?
Yes.  Users will need to connect to the USF’s network in order to authenticate their USF username/password with the Pharos Public Use MFP/Copier.
If you are a Library patron or Alumni/Guest/Contractor/Affiliate, please 
visit the Public Use Multi-functional Printer/Copier main page  Click on the role that is most applicable to you:  Library, Alumni, Guest, or Contractor/Affiliate.  There is information pertaining to obtaining a temporary username/password.

12. I have a personal laptop, how can I connect to USF’s network?
Users with personal laptops can connect and authenticate through USFWireless.  Please visit the ITS website for wireless access information http://www.usfca.edu/its/network/wireless/

13. How do I default my print jobs to double-sided (duplex)?
Users can set their own printing preferences in the print dialog box Printer Properties from their computers.

If you want to keep your preferences, go to Start, then to Devices and Printers control panel applet, select the printer and mouse right click to bring up the preferences window.  Set your settings and click Apply.  From then on, your printing will always be the settings you just saved.

14. How long will my print job stay in the held queue?
Print jobs are currently held for 2 hours.  Users will be able to release print jobs at any Pharos Public Use MFP/Copier device within 2 hours from sending a job.

15. How do I report a problem or issue?

16. How do I cancel a print job?
When a user swipes his/her USF ID card or USF Copy/Print at the MFP, he/she will be presented with a list of print jobs being held in queue. User may select and delete any job they do not wish to print. Once a job is selected and released for printing, it cannot be cancelled, a user’s account will be debited the amount for that print job.  Note:  Print jobs are currently held for 2 hours.  Users will be able to release print jobs at any Pharos Public Use MFP/Copier device within 2 hours from sending a job.

17. Can I use a credit card to pay for my print job?
No, not directly.  Pharos only reads USF ID cards and USF Copy/Print cards.  To add funds to these cards, please visit USF One Card and use your credit card to add value (Don$).  There is a minimum of $5 per add-value transaction.

18. What should I do if I’m trying to print a PDF file?
Before printing, save the file and reopen it in Adobe Reader to print.

19. What operating systems will the Pharos client software work on?
The software will work on 32 and 64 bit versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7. It will also work with Mac OSX 10.4 and up.

20. Can I print from home?
No. You need to be on the USF network to print with the Pharos client software.
