  2010-2011

  • July 2010: Four USF students are awarded the Chinese Government Scholarship to study Chinese in China this year.  The scholarship will sponsor their study of Chinese for a year or two years.  Samuel Patterson (Xi'an Foreign Studies University) and Joshua Evetushick (Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan) received two-year scholarship.  Kimberly Steffen (Shanghai Normal University) and Chelsea LaLancette (Yunan University) received one-year scholarship.  They will start their study in September. Congratulations to Sam, Josh, Kimberly and Chelsea!

2009-2010 

  • May 2010: Samuel Patterson won the third place prize in the 9th "Chinese Bridge": Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students held at the Confucius Institute in San Francisco on May 2, 2010.
  • April 2010: The CLTAC 35th Annual Mandarin Speech Contest will be held in Lowell High School on April 24, 2010.  Several USF students will compete at the college level.
  • April 2010: Gretchen Johnson and Ettlin Alexander recently received a scholarship from Fudan University, Shanghai, China, to study Chinese for four weeks in the summer of 2010. 
  • April 2010: Prof. LI, Guodong from Hiroshima University gave a talk on "Eastward Spread of the Hmong Culture" at Fromm Hall on April 7.  The talk was sponsored by the Department of Modern and Classical Languages.
  • March 2010: New HSK test was held at Yellow River Chinese School in Fremont.  About fifty students took the test.  This is the first time that USF HSK testing center is collaborating with a local Chinese school to hold the HSK test.  USF will hold two more HSK tests on its campus in May and in October.  For more information, please visit our website at http://www.usfca.edu/hsk.
  • February 2010: The Chinese program and the Chinese Scholars and Students Association jointly held the Chinese New Year (The Year of Tiger) Celebration at Fromm Hall on February 19.  About three hundred people attended the event, including USF President Father Privett, faculty members from ESL, History department and Modern and Classical Languages department, and USF students.
  • October 2009:The Chinese program hosted the Fall Workshop on Chinese Language Teaching  on October 31.  The Fall Workshop is an annual event of the Chinese Language Teachers Association in California (CLTAC).  Five scholars, including Prof. Zhiqiang Li from USF, presented on teaching methodology, task-based language instruction and phonetic basis of pronunciation teaching.  Associate Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Peter Novak, delivered the welcome address.  According to the presdient of CLTAC, Prof. XU Heping from Defense Language Institute, the workshop "was a record breaking event by every means! It had drawn more than 150 participants, the most of its kind in our history and the speakers delivered great presentations! I've received many complimentary and congratulatory remarks, emails from participants during and after conference."  
  • July 2009: Mike Reznik and Eric Weldon (Asian Studies major, Chinese minor) have received a Chinese Government Scholarship of language study to study Chinese in China.  The scholarship will sponsor their study of Chinese in a Chinese university for one year.  Mike is admitted into Beijing Language and Culture University, and Eric into Tianjin Normal University.
  • May 2009: Mike Reznik won the first place in the 8th "Chinese Bridge": Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students held at the Confucius Institute in San Francisco on May 10, 2009.  The Chinese Bridge competition has three parts: Chinese speech, questions and answers on Chinese history/culture, and artistic performance.  Mike will represent the Northern California region to compete in the final round of the world-wide "Chinese Bridge" competition to be held in Changshai (the capital city of Hunan province) in July 2009.  All the cost will be covered by the Confucius Institute in San Francisco.  Mike is featured in the Fall 2009 issue of USF magazine.
