An electronic version of the campus phone directory is available via our gopher and World Wide Web servers.
How To Get To the Electronic Phone Directory
First start your gopher program. On the VAX just type gopher; on Dons type the number next to the Gopher listing; or on a desktop machine just launch your Mac or PC version of gopher. Choose Electronic Phone Directories from the gopher menu and then Campus Phone Directory from the next menu.
If you are using a World Wide Web Browser like Mosaic, Netscape, Cello or MacWeb, point it to USF's Web server. From the file menu choose Open URL... (Mosaic and MacWeb) or Open Location... (Netscape) and type the following "http://www.usfca.edu/". All the Computer Labs are configured to open USF's "Home Page" on startup. Click on Searching and Directories, then choose USF Phone Directory (PH Server).
How to Use The Electronic Phone Directory
Just type the first or last name of the individual you are looking for and then press return (gopher) or click the "Submit" button (Web Access). The server will return a list of all the people who have that exact name. For privacy reasons, students only have their e-mail addresses listed.
Sometimes a little more digging is necessary. For example: You're trying to find out my e-mail address "scheide@usfca.edu". But you don't know how to spell scheide. You can do a search on "sch*" to return all the people whose names start with sch. This may also be necessary if you are searching for people who go by a shortened first name. Ben Baab is listed as Baab, Benjamin F. so a search on just Ben will not return Ben's listing. Ben* returns the listing for Benjamin F. Baab as well as 5 other people.
Updates
The Electronic phone directory is updated weekly using data from the VAX. This is the same data that is used in producing the printed phone directory with the addition of students and part time faculty. To update entries you can contact the person who normally handles updating of the phone directory or send e-mail to phone-directory@usfca.edu.
