Caring for Caregivers: Filipina Migrant Workers and Community Building during Crisis

Join us for an insightful discussion with Dr. Valerie Francisco-Menchavez, Assistant Dean for Restorative and Transformative Racial Justice and Associate Professor of Sociology at San Francisco State University, as she presents her latest work, Caring for Caregivers. This talk centers the experiences of Filipino caregivers in the San Francisco Bay Area from 2013 to 2021, highlighting their transnational journeys, survival strategies, and how they support one another in the face of exploitative, low-wage labor.
Migrant workers have long been called upon to sacrifice their own health to provide care in both facilities and private homes across the United States. But what draws them to this work, and how do they care for themselves? Dr. Francisco-Menchavez will explore these questions while shedding light on how caregivers navigate the crumbling US healthcare system and create grassroots networks of support.
Don't miss this opportunity to engage in a meaningful conversation on labor, migration, and community resilience.
