Pope Francis’s pontificate has been marked by continuous appeals urging everyone, without exception, to commit to preserving the planet—our Common Home. The cry of Mother Earth resonates with the cry of the poor because we are interconnected, destined to build together, with all living beings, a harmonious and ecologically integral existence (Laudato Si’, 2015, n. 139). From Laudato Si’ (2015) to Laudate Deum (2023), including Querida Amazonia (2020) and Fratelli Tutti (2020), the Pope Francis demands that we act together to champion and defend all species inhabiting our planet.

Barwendé Médard Sané, SJ, Ed.D, is a Postdoctoral Associate at The Earth Commons Institute for Environment and Sustainability at Georgetown University with a close relationship to the Institute for Nonviolence and Social Justice, our Loyola Jesuit community, here at USF where he completed his doctorate. His research focuses on integrating Afrocentric epistemologies into the quest for environmental justice. Fr. Sané is deeply committed to strategic peacebuilding education modules grounded in African values, integral ecology, and Catholic principles.
