USF’s Jonathan Mogbo Headed to the NBA
Jonathan Mogbo was selected by the Toronto Raptors with the 31st overall pick in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft.
"Our entire USF basketball family is so proud of Jonathan being selected by the Toronto Raptors," said head coach Chris Gerlufsen. "Getting drafted is a testament to all his hard work and dedication during his time here on the Hilltop. He is a prime example of taking full advantage of his opportunities. We can't wait to root him on at the next level."
Mogbo, a sociology major, is the first student-athlete from San Francisco to be drafted into the NBA in 42 years. Quintin Dailey (Round 1, Pick 7/Chicago Bulls), Wallace Bryant (Round 2, Pick 30/Chicago Bulls) and John Hedgewood (Round 9, Pick 186/San Diego Clippers) were selected in 1982.
Overall, Mogbo is the 39th student-athlete from the university to be drafted into the NBA. He is the eighth Don to be drafted in the second round.
Mogbo said he appreciated his time at USF.
“It was great,” Mogbo said in an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle. “I went there and I trusted the process. They believed in me. They just gave me the keys.”
Mogbo became one of the most dominant big men in the country during his lone season on the Hilltop. The Missouri State transfer was named WCC Newcomer of the Year and earned All-WCC First Team and NABC District 9 First Team honors. Overall, Mogbo played and started in all 34 games for San Francisco in 2023-24 while averaging 28.9 minutes per game.
A forward, he led the Dons in scoring (14.2 ppg), rebounding (10.1) and steals (1.6 spg). Within the WCC, the West Palm Beach, Fla. native finished first in rebounding, field goal percentage and steals while also finishing sixth in scoring and eighteenth in minutes.
Mogbo finished the season with a 63.6 field goal percentage (206-324), second only to Bill Cartwright's 66.7 percent (168-252) in 1978-79.
