On a foggy morning in April, when a group of young women from Oakland paddled out to take a surfing lesson at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica, they broke a barrier that had stood for more than 15 years.

While the public conversation about the future of technology grows increasingly anxious, Jada Smith is actively optimistic. The third-year University of San Francisco Law student says she wants to “debunk the idea that Web3 is just about making money, and show that it is a way to improve the quality of life for every single person.”

The Japanese studies graduate talks about food, music, lyrics, generative AI, and software engineering.

“Do your knees ache when you run? Do your ankles hurt when you jump?”

Gerwyn Hughes wants to know. He’s a professor of kinesiology and he runs the new motion analysis lab in Harney Science Center at USF.

More than 140 students and professors traveled to 11 different USF global immersion programs in more than a dozen countries over the summer, exploring topics like the biology of cancer and learning more about the lives of migrants at the Spain and Morocco border.

Karen Wong MBA ’06 is the daughter of two Chinese refugees who moved to San Francisco to pursue the American Dream. Wong’s parents co-founded the San Francisco institution: R&G Lounge, famous for its salt and pepper Dungeness crab.
