Bridging Skills and Tools from Academia to Support Our Communities

For Edgar Ibarra Gutierrez, the journey into professional communication has been anything but conventional. Before joining the Master of Arts in Professional Communication (MAPC) program at USF, Edgar was deeply engaged in community-based public relations through his work in the nonprofit sector.
His experience supporting advocacy efforts around criminal and juvenile justice gave him a firsthand understanding of the power of communication in shaping public narratives. "I don’t consider myself a communication professional just yet," he admits. "I see myself as someone who saw a gap or a problem and is attempting to provide support and solutions." Recognizing the need to refine his expertise, Edgar chose MAPC to strengthen his communication skills, learn the language of the field, and build connections that would help him make a greater impact.
One of the defining moments in Edgar’s academic and professional journey was receiving The LAGRANT Foundation Scholarship, a prestigious award given to outstanding ethnic minority students pursuing careers in advertising, marketing, and public relations. Through this opportunity, he traveled to New York, networking with top PR firms such as Weber Shandwick and the marketing team at Starbucks. His dedication to community-driven narratives and strategic communication set him apart, allowing him to gain visibility in the industry. "This experience reinforced the importance of mentorship and access to professional networks," he says, recognizing the value of such platforms in supporting underrepresented voices in communication.
As a MAPC student, Edgar has been able to apply his experiences to a structured academic framework, gaining insights that will propel his career. His concentration in Strategic Communication aligns with his goal of helping organizations navigate an increasingly connected world. "With the world becoming more connected through technology and information, it will be key to have someone as part of your organization with the ability to think strategically and make sense of all the information," he explains. One of his most memorable experiences in the program was collaborating with a classmate to develop a digital marketing strategy for BlackBerry, which allowed him to explore innovative communication approaches in a practical setting. Additionally, he found inspiration in his Digital Marketing class with Professor Cameron Conaway, who emphasized grounding professional decisions in personal values — an insight that continues to shape Edgar’s approach to communication.
To prospective students who are considering USF’s MAPC program, Edgar highly recommends the program for its commitment to working professionals, global perspective, and strong industry connections.
MAPC not only supports you through class instruction but also connects you with professionals in the field through guest speakers and internships.”
For Edgar, the program is more than just an academic pursuit — it’s a bridge between academia and real-world impact, equipping him with the tools to bring meaningful change to his community.
