Biography
Professor McCarthy taught at the law school for 36 years from 1966 to 2002. His courses included Intellectual Property, Copyright, Civil Procedure, Remedies and Antitrust. He is the author of the multi-volume treatise “McCarthy on Trademarks and Unfair Competition,” now in its Fifth Edition and cited in over 8000 judicial decisions, including 19 U.S. Supreme Court cases. He is also the author of: McCarthy & Schechter on The Rights of Publicity and Privacy; and McCarthy’s Desk Encyclopedia of Intellectual Property. McCarthy was a member of the American Law Institute advisory committee engaged in drafting the 1995 Restatement of the Law of Unfair Competition and a member of the Trademark Review Commission, which drafted the 1989 revisions to the Lanham Act. The Intellectual Asset Management magazine inducted McCarthy into the Intellectual Property Hall Of Fame in 2012. He is admitted to practice in the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and California.
