Bernadine Bernardino ’24 Uses Communication as a Tool for Change
The Master of Arts in Professional Communication (MAPC) program at USF is a powerful platform for professionals looking to advance their careers, bring greater purpose to their work, and amplify their impact.
For Bernadine Bernardino ’24, a seasoned Communications Officer, joining the MAPC program marked a transformative step in her journey. With years of experience serving communities, Bernadine felt the need to sharpen her skills to stay relevant in a constantly changing industry. "Communication is constantly evolving, and I wanted to become a better communicator to serve communities more effectively," she shares. The MAPC program became the perfect catalyst for her career growth, opening doors she hadn’t previously imagined.
Bernadine’s journey to USF began serendipitously during a visit to San Francisco in 2021. Reconnecting with a college friend, Hedda, who was then enrolled in the MAPC program, she got a glimpse of the vibrant USF experience. Hedda’s enthusiasm and insights — from academics to community involvement — sparked Bernadine’s interest. She explored other programs but found USF’s Jesuit identity and MAPC’s tailored curriculum to be uniquely aligned with her goals. "As someone who attended a Catholic high school, USF felt like coming home," she recalls. Bernadine chose the Strategic Communication concentration, a natural fit for her passion for creating impactful campaigns and branding.
One of the standout aspects of the MAPC program for Bernadine has been the invaluable mentorship from faculty members like Kelly L’Engle and Larry Kamer. Larry’s words in his Crisis Communication class left a lasting impression: “The single biggest predictor of loss of trust in a crisis is the perception that you don’t care.” This principle became a guiding philosophy for Bernadine, emphasizing the importance of empathy and authenticity in communication. Her most memorable experience, however, came in Kelly L’Engle’s Risk Communication class, where she collaborated on a challenging project about emergency preparedness for nursing homes. Despite initial hurdles, the project became a turning point, teaching her the power of collaboration and conflict resolution. “While we didn’t get the highest grade, I was incredibly proud of our intervention,” she says, reflecting on how the experience strengthened her bonds with her group mates.
For Bernadine, being an international student at USF has been both a gratifying and transformative experience. She appreciated the university’s commitment to fostering a supportive environment, from its extensive resources — like the Gender and Sexuality Center and CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services) — to its cultural celebrations and networking opportunities. “USF’s dedication to creating a culture of giving back and encouraging students to explore their privilege is unparalleled,” she shares. These resources not only enhanced her academic journey but also provided a sense of belonging and community.
The MAPC program proved instrumental in shaping Bernadine’s career trajectory, opening up opportunities she hadn’t anticipated. Her work as an Office Specialist with the San Mateo County Registration & Elections Division during the 2024 National Presidential Election stands out as a highlight. From proofreading election materials in Filipino to ensuring their accuracy, Bernadine’s role underscored the critical importance of clear and reliable communication. “This work was about ensuring every voice counted,” she says, reflecting on the meticulous attention required to preserve the integrity of each vote. The experience not only honed her professional skills but also deepened her commitment to using communication as a tool for meaningful change.
Bernadine’s appreciation for the MAPC program extends beyond her personal achievements. She cherishes the friendships and professional connections she built during her time at USF, many of which continue to enrich her life. For those considering the program, she has a heartfelt message: “The curriculum challenges you to think critically, adapt, and innovate. Beyond academics, USF provides an incredible support system. You’re not just earning a degree — you’re joining a community that supports you every step of the way.” For Bernadine, the MAPC program has been more than an educational journey — it has been a platform to amplify her own voice and the voices of those she serves, embodying the spirit of change and impact.
